PRODUCT HISTORY
ARI SPIRAL TANK CARS
Another ROKA first for the modern North American railroad modeling scene is the never before modeled Ready-to-Run (RTR) HO scale 33,700 Gallon coiled pressurized insulated tank cars manufactured by ARI/Greenbrier with coiled lap welded outer tank steel jackets. Built to meet DOT-112J340W specifications for the transportation of pressurized Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and also for the transportation of low pressure high hazard..
To meet customer demand, ROKA models have added a third version to the HO scale 33.7-gallon spiral tank car model project. This new model version represents prototype brake equipment positioning with the brake reservoir and AB control valve at the "B End" of the model.
All three different versions of spiral tank car brake equipment arrangements are now available for no cash down reservations.  Each of these three model versions will include two different types of tank jacket lap welding. These multiple versions of spiral tank car models ROKA Models is offering deliver the accurate super detail that discerning prototype modelers demand.
The diversity of historically and prototypically accurate detail in these limited run models offered by ROKA Models brings even more chooses to the modeler.
These 33.7-gallon spiral tank car models are now being manufactured with expected delivery in Q1 2025. Be sure to reserve yours today to avoid disappointment.

ABOUT
Safe-Pak History
In 1973 the first fully enclosed autorack railroad cars were designed by competing manufacturers to address the problem of increasing vandalism to new automobiles in transit.
The first production fully enclosed autorack railroad cars were delivered in late 1974 and early 1975.
The Whitehead & Kales company design, named Safe-Pak, were delivered to the ATSF, SBD, CSXT Patch, UP/WP, UP, WP, NW, SCL, FEC, and CPAA.
The Safe-Pak autorack cars were in service on US and Canadian railroads until the late 1990s.

CHICAGO GREAT WESTERN BLACK GATC TANK CAR 1955-1970

An excellent model, it looks great and I can't wait to get a different version, keep up the great work!

Roka Models has certainly come up with a fantastic model! The model was easy to order, arrived in less than a week after ordering, and was extremely well packaged. The level of detail along with the quality and accuracy of the paint job was "top shelf". I am sure that any person that models the era that this car represents would want one for their model railroad!!!

Great product. A bit pricey though

Keep coming up with new train cars. It is variety to the layout

  Oh well done

I love this car! The detailing and workmanship are amazing.

CGW/C&NW BLACK GATC TANK CAR 1968-1995

Got a clamshell and atsf fire car as a trial. Exquisite models and very unique. The detail is tremendous, cars track well and they’re not something you see elsewhere
Worth the cost, imo, for what you get
Liked so much, pre-ordered a couple spiral tank cars too

A terrific car with exceptional details!

Bottom line first: I am quite pleased to have this iconic tank car for my collection of HO scale Chicago Great Western models.
From 1954 to 1957, the CGW took delivery of 42 19K gallon tank cars from American Car & Foundry and General American Transportation Corp. They were “color-code” painted – most of them in maroon, some with a yellow band around the dome, for diesel fuel loading, a few in black for oil loading, one in green for lube oil, and one in silver for kerosene.
In the March, 1990 issue of Railroad Model Craftsman, Rev Bill Landis wrote an article about scratchbuilding these cars. Basically kitbashed Athearn models, they more closely resembled the ACF than the GATC cars.
Now, some 35 years later, Roka Models have done a run of RTR 16K gallon GATC tank cars, painted, lettered, and numbered for the CGW in all the above noted paint schemes save for the single silver kerosene loading car, # 290. I do not have blueprints or even scale line drawings from which to make precise comparison between prototype and model, and “rivet counters” may take me to task for this, but I think the Roka cars are reasonable stand-ins for the 19K gallon CGW cars. Some noteworthy CGW/GATC specific details: correct configuration of the handrails, Superior horizontal hand brakes, double tank bands at each end, and Barber roller bearing trucks.
To my eye, the most faithful-to-prototype color rendition of the Roka cars are the two black oil loading cars, #s 254 and 262. Lettering is crisp and accurately placed. On the top of the tank, on both sides of the dome, there is a 5 ft wide light gray patch, which I cannot make out on prototype photos I’ve seen, all of which were taken after the car had been in service for many years. Perhaps, the patch was an “as-delivered” paint feature which became obscured over time with weathering and grime? Otherwise, my model seems a very good likeness of the prototype photo by E E Valentine pictured in Gene Green’s Chicago Great Western Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment.

Ordered the fire service tank car which i thought wasa pretty cool car and unique model. I received the car very well packaged in the shipping box and the model was very secure inside its box as well. From order placement to delivery was roughly 5 to 7 days as there was a weekend involved.
