Evans Side Slide: History

Evans Products Company built its “Side-Slider” all-door boxcars during the late 1970s, with production running between February 1976 and October 1977. Unlike a standard boxcar, the Side Slider was designed with broad side-door access so forklifts could load long, wide, and stacked materials such as lumber, plywood, and drywall directly through the car sides.

The result was a highly specialized car built for the forest-products market. These cars appeared across American and Canadian railroads, private shippers, and leasing fleets, carrying the markings of lumber companies, regional railroads, and industrial operators. Their unusual side-door design, limited production, and long service life make them a standout prototype for modelers of late 1970s through modern-era freight operations.

Note: “Side-Slider” was a brand name owned by Evans Products Company.
